It is now generally recognized that disaster recovery planning is a vital business activity. A Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) is a required element of the TL 9000 quality standard. BIZPHYX offers comprehensive business continuity, disaster recovery and risk management training and consulting services.
Preparation: Understanding DRP
In our audio FAQ, we explain that disaster recovery is the process by which you "recover" or resume business after a natural or man-made disaster or serious event. Examples would include recovering from a data loss and facilities damage from events like floods, fire or earthquakes. Disaster recovery planning (DRP), also includes procedures to deal with terrorist attacks. It has many commonalities with business continuity planning (BCP), but it focuses more on the planned response to these specific events.
Disaster recovery planning can be viewed as a subset of the larger process known as BCP and should include planning for resumption of applications, data, hardware, communications (such as networking) and other IT infrastructure. For example, is your data back-up solution out of your local area? If not, what would happen in the case of a regional power outage due to a hurricane? Disaster recovery plans make sure you can continue to deliver products and services to your customers. Disaster recovery planning can reduce losses through mitigation and improved risk handling.
Implementation: Developing Your Plan
Depending upon the size and scope of your business and existing QMS, there can be several steps involved in developing a disaster recovery plan such as threat analysis, identifying risks, assigning risk owners, documentation, implementation, testing (review and rehearse), communication to employees and planned maintenance (monitoring). In the latest version of TL 9000 (Release 5.0), there is the addition of a risk management requirement.
Maintenance: TL 9000 Requirement
TL 9000 requires you to have a disaster recovery plan. BIZPHYX offers consulting services to upgrade you to TL 9000 Release 5.0, as well as training on how to implement a risk management program, which includes disaster recovery planning. Disaster recovery planning is something that can be combined with business continuity planning (BCP), so that duplication of effort is not required. BIZPHYX assists clients with the development of these plans and manuals.
